Herbert & Effie Shaw

From the second page of Lavinia‘s album. The back is blank and Mary Shaw has added “Herbert & Eva ?1882” next to the photograph.

Herbert Shaw was Mary’s father so there seems little doubt that this is him. Mary knew Eva Shaw (born Mar 1871) for many years so there should be no doubt about this identification. Having said that I’m having trouble sorting the photos of Eva and her sister Effie Shaw born March 1868. From other photos it seems to be Effie with these eyes (a bit like brother Ernest) and Eva with a softer, rounder face. If this was taken in mid 1881 then Herbert would have been nearly 13, Eva just 11 and Effie just 14.

The photographer being Stewart & Co doesn’t help much with the dating as a number of web sources agree that they operated at 217 & 219 Bourke from 1879 until at least the 1890s.
