Herbert Shaw
c1880From Herbert Shaw‘s album – no caption but recognisably Herbert (at 10 or 11?). This fits with the 1880 set of Batchelder family portraits previously posted. It also helps date the previously posted photo of Herbert. |
Ernest Shaw
c1880From the second page of Lavinia‘s album. Mary Shaw has written “Ernest? Shaw ?1886” on the face of the photograph. Looking at other photographs of Lavinia’s brother Ernest there seems little doubt that this is him. I’ve posted a three other Batchelder & Co photos which were likely taken at the same time. Ernest looks to be about 16 in this one so that would fit with the c1880 date. |
Alfred Henry Shaw
c1880The last photo from the first page of Lavinia‘s album. Mary Shaw added the caption, “Alfred Shaw born 1855”. Mary probably mixed up her Alfreds. Alfred Henry Shaw was born in August 1832 and his son Alfred Heywood Shaw in 1858. There are quite a few photos of Alfred Senior and this is definitely him. Two other Batchelder photos were on the same album page (Lavinia and Eva) and I’ve dated these about 1880. This could have been taken on the same day but to my eye Alfred could be a bit older than 48. |
Lavinia Shaw
c1880This photo is from the first page of Lavinia‘s album. Mary Shaw much later added the caption, “Lavinia Shaw ?1880”. I’ve covered the dating and photographer in a previous post on a photo of her sister Eva likely taken on the same day. |
Eva Shaw
c1880This photo is from the first page of the same album. Considering Mary Shaw’s caption, “Eva Shaw ?1880”, below the photo and various other photos in family albums there is not much doubt that this is Lavinia’s younger sister Eva Shaw. Eva was born in March 1871 and at a guess this child is about 9 putting the date of the photo at about 1880. This would fit with a photo of Lavinia at what looks like about 18 from the same album page. Both photos are from Batchelder and Co. which operated at 41 Collins St from 1867 until 1891 according to SLV notes on similar photos |
